Arrive in Kathmandu, check in at the hotel, and get some rest. Later in the day, go shopping at Thamel. Return to the hotel for an overnight stay at Kathmandu.
Start the day with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which takes about 40 minutes. On arrival in Lukla, have breakfast. Start the leisurely first-day walk to Phakding or Benkar and reach there by late afternoon.Overnight stay at Phakding.
Leave Phakding early, by 7. 30 am, after an early breakfast, as it is a long climb to Namche Bazar. The trail goes through gentle ups and downs until Jorsale (about 3 hours from Phakding). After an early lunch in Jorsale, begin the three-hour climb to Namche Bazar.
Today is an acclimatization day before ascending to high altitude. This day will help the body get used to the altitude. The time spent here will increase the chances of your well-being as you go higher.
Commence the trek by climbing up to the Syangboche airstrip and then descending to Khumjung. The twin Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde are home to some of the most famous Everest climbers. Walk to Khunde from Khumjung and visit the hospital, which was established and funded by Sir Edmund Hillary's Himalayan Trust. Khumjung Monastery is one of the interesting places to visit while there, as it is known as the place that stores one of the alleged Yeti scalps that are to be found in the region.
As we follow the path, enjoy the first really good views of the great peaks of the Khumbu: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. Cross the Dudh Kosi River and climb to Tengboche Monastery, passing through several villages and numerous tea shops. Tengboche is the spiritual centre for the Khumbu and a training centre for new monks. The Rimpoche (incarnate Lama) of Tengboche resides there, and the area is considered holy; nothing may be haunted or killed. With the treasures of Ama Dablam and Mount Everest in the background, the spirituality and scenic value of the site never fail to impress.
The next day, the trail descends from Tengboche to Deboche (3,820 m) and then crosses the river over a suspension bridge, offering a great view of Mount Ama Dablam above the crashing waters of the Dudh Kosi. Then pass a large mani wall in the middle of the trail, and finally level out to reach Pangboche. The trail follows the Imja Khola and passes the yak grazing areas of Shomare and then the small tea house of Orsho. The trail then crosses a bridge over the river. The right path leads to Dingboche in about 45 minutes from the bridge.
The rest day at Dingboche can be used for a day walk up to Chukhung, with fabulous views of the Lhotse/Nuptse wall and Ama Dablam as well. Alternatively, a half-day walk can be made to the Nangkartshang peak or the Ama Dablam lakes across the moraine.
Commence the trail by climbing the ridge behind the village and then coming onto a level plain with enormous views of Taboche in the background. Continue the trail along the plain and then cross a bridge that drains from the Khumbu Glacier a couple hundred meters above and then climb gently to Duglha. Duglha is just above 15,000 feet, so a night halt there should definitely help with acclimatization, though many trekkers carry on to Lobuche the same day.
The next climb to the hill after Duglha can be hard, especially if you are having problems with altitude. At the crest are the Everest memorials for sherpas and climbers who did not make it down from Everest. From the memorials, the gradient eases off, and in about an hour, you spot the lodges of Lobuche.
The trail goes along the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, involving a lot of hard walking over boulders and scree slopes. Mount Pumori comes into view as one approaches Gorak Shep, which you would reach by 11 am. Continue to Everest Base Camp and return to base by late evening.
Today, very early in the morning, begin the ascent to Kala Patthar, which will take approximately two hours, depending on your level of acclimatization. From this high point, a magnificent 360-degree view unfolds, with all the major peaks of the region visible. Come down in an hour to Gorak Shep, and after a quick lunch, head down the valley to Lobuche, which you would reach by evening. This is a long day but a better alternative to spending two nights at Gorak Shep.
Today's descent down the valley will now be swift, as we are losing altitude and the air is getting thicker. Break for lunch at Pheriche and then reach Pangboche by late afternoon.
Next day, trek down to Tengboche and then, with a quick stop for tea, descend steeply to Phunki Tenka. Break for lunch at Phunki Tenka and then climb to Kyanjuma, which we would reach by late afternoon.
Leave Kyanjuma after breakfast and reach Namche Bazar in an hour and a half. Spend a couple of hours here, have an early lunch, and leave for Namche by noon to reach Monjo. Descend steeply to the Benkar Bridge. From the bridge, climb up to the park headquarters, and then the trail levels out. Enter Monjo by early evening.
Leave Monjo after a late breakfast and stop for lunch at Thado Koshi. From Thado Koshi, continue the trail for Lukla, which we will reach by afternoon.
Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu in the morning. Transfer to the hotel and step out to enjoy the views of the city. Overnight stay at Kathmandu.
After breakfast, complete the check-out formalities and head for your onward journey.
